It is with great pleasure that we invite you to send delegates and accompanying persons to the highly anticipated 92^nd Annual Meeting of ICOLD, scheduled to take place in the vibrant capital city of India, New Delhi, from 27 Sept. to 3 Oct., 2024.

Building upon the successes of previous gatherings organized by INCOLD, including Congresses in 1951 and 1979, as well as the Annual Meeting in 1998, we eagerly anticipate a remarkable and unforgettable ICOLD 2024 92nd Annual Meeting and International Symposium.

The theme of the ICOLD 2024 International Symposium is "Dams for People, Water, Environment & Development," emphasizing the critical role of dams in sustainable development and environmental protection. The event will feature a diverse range of technical sessions, plenary talks, and panel discussions, providing an excellent platform for participants to share experiences, insights, and best practices while fostering mutual learning.

Alongside the technical program, there will be ample opportunities for networking and socializing, including cultural events, technical tours, and social activities, enabling you to immerse yourself in the local culture and experience the warm hospitality of the host country. India holds a prominent position as a strong and longstanding member of ICOLD, boasting an impressive track record of over 5264 dams, with approximately 437 dams currently under construction. The nation stands as a global leader in the development of vital water infrastructure, spearheading significant projects such as the Bhakhra, Koldam, Tehri Dam, Bichom Dam and Subansiri Lower projects, as well as the World Bank-supported Dam Rehabilitation Improvement Projects. These modern water infrastructure endeavors, supported by INCOLD, have made substantial contributions to the sustainable growth of India's agriculture, water supply, and power sectors, effectively meeting the escalating demands of a dynamic nation.

The Brazilian Committee on Dams - CBDB is pleased to inform the DAMSWEEK 2023, which comprises the events XXXIV National Seminar on Large Dams - SNGB, II International Symposium on Rockfill Dams - SIBE, in partnership with the Chinese (CHINCOLD) and Spanish (SPANCOLD) committees and the IV Technical Meeting on Incidents and Accidents on Dams - ETIAB.

DAMSWEEK will be held from August 27 to 31, 2023, at the Hotel Grand Carimã Resort & Convention Center, in Foz do Iguaçu - PR.

The DAMSWEEK 2023 program will include, for the first time in Brazil, the ICOLD YEF, Young Engineers Forum, for young engineers in the dam area, the INCA - ICOLD National Committees of the Americas Meeting, the Portuguese Language Dams Committees Meeting, the Round Table on Bottom Dischargers and the CBDB/ABRAGE Workshop - Flood Management, Climate Change and Dam Safety.

In parallel to the event, we highlight the Technical Exhibition where companies providing services, suppliers of products and services related to projects, construction and operation of dams, designers, builders, assemblers of electromechanical equipment, entrepreneurs, consultants and research centers will be able to present themselves, creating the opportunity for prospecting new business.

For this edition we estimate an audience of 800 participants formed by professionals and companies linked to the energy sector interested in the exchange of information, dissemination of new technologies related to dam engineering and, especially committed to the national engineering.

La conférence HYDROPOWER EUROPE qui a eu lieu en ligne le 23 février 2022 était l'événement final du projet HYDROPOWER EUROPE - un projet qui a été créé dans le cadre de l'appel de l'Union européenne : " H2020-LC-SC3-2018-2019-2020 (BUILDING A LOW-CARBON, CLIMATE RESILIENT FUTURE : SECURE, CLEAN AND EFFICIENT ENERGY) " et qui est en cours depuis novembre 2018. 

L'objectif de cet événement était de présenter les résultats du projet HYDROPOWER EUROPE, à savoir les conclusions tirées de la consultation des parties prenantes du secteur qui ont conduit à la création du programme de recherche et d'innovation (RIA) et de la feuille de route stratégique pour l'industrie (SIR) (Voir les publications clés sur https://hydropower-europe.eu et voir notre vidéo de diffusion sur : https://youtu.be/Kwccf0ZESxo).

Anton Schleiss, président d'honneur de la Commission internationale des grands barrages (CIGB) et professeur émérite de l'EPFL, a ouvert la conférence en présentant la situation de l'hydroélectricité en Europe et en suggérant que cette source d'énergie pourrait fournir des contributions accrues dans les années à venir, reconnaissant que seuls deux tiers du potentiel économiquement réalisable ont été exploités jusqu'à présent. En effet, dans le domaine de la production d'énergie, l'hydroélectricité reste un outil d'approvisionnement excellent et sûr pour soutenir la transition énergétique et la lutte contre le réchauffement climatique. Il a révélé que dans plus de la moitié des pays d'Europe, l'hydroélectricité assure encore une part importante (>25%) de la production d'électricité, ce qui est important pour le succès de la transition énergétique en garantissant un approvisionnement sûr en électricité. Au niveau mondial, l'hydroélectricité produit à elle seule les trois quarts de l'électricité renouvelable.

Mme Hélène Chraye, chef d'unité pour la transition énergétique propre et directrice adjointe de Clean Planet à la DG R&I, a suivi l'ouverture avec une vue d'ensemble des "Objectifs du financement européen de la R&I en matière d'hydroélectricité" et de la stratégie globale de l'UE pour atteindre les objectifs fixés par le Green Deal européen.  

Le webinaire s'est ensuite concentré sur les principaux résultats du projet HYDROPOWER EUROPE. Anton Schleiss et Jean-Jacques Fry ont eu la tâche de présenter les points forts de nos principaux documents : l'AIR et le SIR, qui ont été créés après trois ans de consultation approfondie impliquant plus de 600 parties prenantes. Les rapports finaux (~140 pages chacun) présentent 18 thèmes de recherche avec 80 sujets (RIA) et 11 directions stratégiques qui comprennent 40 actions détaillées (SIR). Deux brochures de synthèse illustrées d'environ 20 pages chacune ont été produites par le forum et donnent un aperçu des résultats de haute à très haute priorité. 

De la Commission européenne, Thomas Schleker, chargé de mission à la DG R&I, et Sébastien Mortier, gestionnaire de portefeuille de projets de recherche au CINEA, ont partagé avec le public quelques impressions sur le travail d'HYDROPOWER EUROPE. Ils ont remercié l'équipe pour la bonne coordination et les excellents résultats. 

Enfin, Mark Morris, un membre de l'équipe de SAMUI France, a clôturé la série de présentations. Il a rappelé à l'auditoire l'importance du rôle de l'hydroélectricité dans la transition énergétique et donc la nécessité d'avoir une voix permanente et commune en Europe pour le secteur de l'hydroélectricité afin de soutenir la recherche et l'innovation ainsi que de sensibiliser le public en promouvant des actions stratégiques. 

Comme on a pu le constater au cours des tables rondes qui ont réuni quelque 130 participants en ligne, l'hydroélectricité en Europe est confrontée à un grand nombre de défis. Les résultats d'HYDROPOWER EUROPE détaillent l'agenda et la feuille de route pour aider à relever ces défis environnementaux, sociétaux, technologiques et commerciaux. Comme l'a conseillé Jean-Jacques Fry lors des déclarations finales : "La communication sur l'hydroélectricité en tant que catalyseur de la transition énergétique est essentielle pour l'avenir. Il est clair que l'hydroélectricité a rendu de grands services pendant plus de 150 ans, mais il est maintenant temps de parler à la société civile et aux décideurs politiques de son potentiel de développement futur".

Anton Schleiss a conclu l'événement en soulignant à nouveau que les résultats du forum HYDROPOWER EUROPE confirment que l'hydroélectricité est un partenaire clé et un catalyseur pour la transition vers une énergie propre, non seulement en Europe, mais aussi dans le monde entier. Il a remercié tous les membres du consortium du projet HYDROPOWER EUROPE, le comité consultatif d'experts ainsi que les plus de 600 parties prenantes participant au forum HYDROPOWER EUROPE pour leur collaboration efficace et fructueuse pendant les 40 mois du projet. Sa gratitude pour le financement est également allée à la Commission européenne représentée par les agents participants qui ont apporté une contribution précieuse au cours du projet. Le Forum a été en mesure de rassembler une grande famille d'experts et de parties prenantes, et avec son soutien continu, la sensibilisation du public sur le rôle important de l'hydroélectricité peut être accrue à l'avenir.
